I don't know about the rest of you, but one of my major frustrations in organizing my home is my spices. I have bought numerous spice shelves, never finding one that really fit my needs for a small apartment with limited cupboard space. I have been using a lazy susan one and a tiered shelf thing for the past little while, but the spices never stayed organized (there's your small insight to my OCD tendencies) and they ended up falling over or out of the cupboard everytime the door was opened.

Then low and behold this:

Jake (who was almost as frustrated as myself) and I saw this in a catalog and decided to spend the $27.79 + shipping and try this out. But alas, we had lost the catalog by the time we finally made the decision.

I cleaned out the rest of my cupboards a couple of weeks ago, but the spice section I ignored and just let them keep falling out because I didn't know what to do with them.

So after searching on the internet I found it (fyi search "spice organizer" not "spice drawer"). Then I found it cheaper on Amazon. Gotta love Amazon. Ordered it.

And it came today.

In the 20 minutes it has been in my cupboard it has won not only the prestigue and time of being worthy to blog about, but has won my heart. I love it. I love it! I LOVE IT! It suites my needs perfectly. Check it out!

I am keeping the lazy susan spice thing for the odds and ends that are too big or the wrong size for the drawers. I don't know what I am going to do with the tiered shelf thing. And, yes, my spices are in alphabetical order.

I am laughing at myself. I was cleaning up my food cupboards and decided I needed a new place to hide the candy from Helen. I finally decided to hide it in the cookie jar that we don't use. I opened it and found a stash of old candy from, I think, Halloween. Obviously this is a good place to hide it from myself too. Too bad there was nothing good left in the stash.

Can't we wait a little longer???

So in Feb 2008 Helen weaned herself from her bink. Fine with me, no sweat of my back, and I didn't have to go through horrible phases like some of my friends did with their trys at weaning the pacifier off their kids.

This year, Helen's quest is to potty train herself. I'm not so much in love with this idea. I'm sure Jake is thinking it is a great idea, but he has never potty trained a kid and I'm not sure he knows all this entails. Potty training involves being a prisoner to your own home and taking a little one to the toilet every 20 minutes. It also means swishing underwear when there is an accident. And then when they semi get it and you can leave your house again you have to know where every toliet is in town - even the yucky, violating kind so in a moment's notice when your kid says "potty" you can dash to the nearest one.

I've been a prisoner to my house enough in the last couple of months. Now that I am starting to feel better (knock on wood) I'd like to get out. And I am still exhuasted most of the day. I really don't think I want to have the energy to potty train now. I want to wait - diapers are easy and conveinent. And the one of the steps in the method I was going to try is simply wait until they are 2 1/2 or 3 years old. And my last reasoning is this - Jake missed out on all the weaning of bottle, bink (ok - I know I just said that one was a breeze) the switching of crib/beds and this which was not a breeze...I really wanted to save the treat of potty training for him (us) to do together. Why did Helen start doing it all now, right when he left?

So my question is this? Do I go with Helen and start, or do I keep letting her practice until I am ready?

And yet again!

Yesterday, my parents and I were all busy trying to get dinner ready. After a few minutes of not hearing any noise from Helen, I decided I needed to look into what mischief I needed to end. I looked down the hall to the bathroom and started sprinting.

Helen has this thing for taking her clothes off, which while annoying, is fine. The part that is not fine is when she takes off her diaper. (Just ask Jake about cleaning up diaper treasures that have rolled everywhere when she does this - he loved that experience). I see from across the house that she is wrapping her diaper up. Ugh - this could be trouble! I get into the bathroom. Helen has taken off her pants, rolled her diaper in a nice ball like mommy and daddy do, and procedes to tell me she has to go potty as she starts to climb up on the toilet. I help her get up on toliet and she goes for the second time on the toilet in her life. We get her cleaned-up and dressed again. When I go back out to the kitchen my mom tells me Helen had been talking about the potty for a few minutes before she disappeared. I never heard anything of the sort.

I wanted to wait to potty train until Helen was ready and not force the matter. Problem is I don't know if I am ready yet.

BIG News!

Helen went potty in the toilet for the first time today!

We aren't even getting ready to potty train, but sometimes we practice sitting on the seat. Today Grandma Nani took her to the potty when changing her diaper, and she went!!!

Blessings of 3 March 2009

  • Husband proclaiming his vision is better than it has been since he came home (still have dr appt #5 today for headache)
  • A daughter that watched a movie without destroying my apartment while I napped
  • The above said nap that let me have enough energy to go on a short walk with said daughter
  • The sound of rain gutters working
  • The smell of un-snow-covered soil
  • Smaller snow piles
  • Ducks to entertain daughter on walk
  • Warm enough weather to open screen door for a bit to air out my stuffy apartment
  • Just enough energy to enjoy above things and count them as blessings in my life

Spoke too soon

I spoke too soon on Saturday morning. The whole day was downhill and Sunday was awful as well. It is Monday morning and I still don't feel good. Ugh - Jake leaves this week. I need to feel better to take care of Miss Helen. More than likely I am leaving out of town as soon right after Jake to crash my parents house - probably for a month.

Just remembered that I need to pay bills. Better get off here and start working on that.
